Cloud Updates

The Northwestern IT CloudOps team is continuously improving our support for public cloud services at Northwestern. For details of Northwestern’s public cloud (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and GitHub) contracts and requirements for access, refer to the IT Service Catalog Cloud pages.

Spring 2023

  • Kion: The Northwestern IT CloudOps team is pleased to announce the availability of the Kion platform for cloud management. You can use Kion to report on your cloud usage across all three cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud), find savings opportunities, and set up budget-driven automation. Log in now at https://cloudgate.northwestern.edu/.
  • Cloud Checkups:  Meet with the CloudOps team for a checkup! These are regular (semiannual) 30 minute meetings where we review access to your cloud environments, go over using Kion to report on your accounts, talk about your future plans and support needs, and answer any questions you may have about using the cloud at Northwestern. Please sign up for a Cloud Checkup today!

Spring 2022

  • AWS Control Tower Update: The Control Tower Landing Zone was updated to the latest version in both Northwestern AWS organizations. This update addressed the deprecation of Python version 3.6 and improved managed security guardrails.
  • AWS Academy: The CloudOps team took over management of the AWS Academy program at Northwestern, which allows instructors to create lab environments in AWS for their classes.
  • AWS IAM User Login Alerts: The CloudOps team set up an alert in Splunk for any AWS web console logins by IAM users, as only federated (NetID) identities should be used for AWS web console or interactive CLI access. CloudOps reaches out to users logging in with IAM user credentials and walks them through logging in with their NetIDs instead.
